The Joy of Endings

I recently adapted an article from Psychology Today into an editorial spread. I chose “The Joy of Endings,” which teaches readers how to move through life with hope for the future instead of despair.
The image in this first spread was taken using a photo filter. The shattered or broken up effect relates to things in life falling apart - or “ending” - but the center of focus remains the “Joy” of the situation.

I wanted my imagery to be neither morbid nor literal. The idea behind having a hand with scissors cutting a ribbon is something of a reference to the Disney movie Hercules, in which a string is cut in order to end the life of a character. Even though the article is not about death, I felt like the action of cutting a ribbon was symbolic and meaningful enough to use it as a visual device in my spreads.
